Quarterly mini-comps have been a fixture at club meetings since 2012. The mini-comp focuses on a particular beer style and is open to all club members. We brew a the beer, evaluate the brews to pick a winner and then let the winner pick the style for the next quarter. Styles are often specific BCP styles but can also be other brewing projects, such as clone beers, new beer styles or beers with specific ingredients. Since the style is chosen three – six months in advance there is plenty of time to perfect your brew. Style talks are given several months prior to the competition to aid the brewer and sampling is done the before the mini-comp to aid the judge. Judging is done at the club meetings using BJCP Scoresheets.
The mini-comp started as a WIZARDS only thing transitioned to a joint activity with the M4 Malt Masters, where each club holds their own mini-comp and the top two beers from each club advance to a best of show round. Now that M4 has been joining us at WIZARDS club meetings, we’re back to just a single night of competition.
All club members are invited to take part in the mini-comp. The WIZARDS mini-comp is held at the February, May, August and November regularly scheduled club meetings.
